COVID-19 UPDATE

Based on the Victorian Government’s Road Map to Reopening, we regret to advise that it will not be feasible for the club to reopen before Phase C of the roadmap comes into effect and, in line with the roadmap, we are hoping to reopen the club on Friday 5th November. By then 80% of Victorians aged 16+ will have been fully vaccinated and it is expected that:

  • Food and drink businesses will be able to offer services indoors, to fully-vaccinated people, with density limits still in place.
  • Small venues can open to up to 25 people, before the density limit applies.
  • Larger venues can open to up to 150 people indoors and 500 people outdoors, with density requirements applied regardless.
  • Nightclubs will also be able to re-open to fully vaccinated people, with a cap of 150 people inside and 500 people outside. Only seated service will be allowed.

Our takeaway food service remains closed during this period. We reiterate there are only five reasons to leave home:

  • Getting food and supplies
  • Exercising for up to two hours
  • Care or caregiving
  • Authorised work or education if you can’t do it from home, or
  • To get vaccinated at the nearest possible location

On behalf of our Board and staff we all hope you are keeping well and safe.

Sadly our 7-day snap lockdown 6 so far has now turned into an infinite lockdown period until Spring Street is happy with the “herd-immunity” numbers. The club sadly is closed until further notice.

Our wonderful staff have all had to be stood down as there is no work for them. Fortunately, staff that have been stood down can apply for the Commonwealth’s COVID-19 Disaster payment but regretfully and understandably we will lose many of them who through financial stress will have to seek employment elsewhere. During the last extended lockdown our staff went from 120 to 55 meaning we had to quickly recruit new staff plus had to train them from scratch in many cases – a real challenge for our senior management team.

The club has also extended an invitation to staff to contact GM Kerry if they are struggling to put food on the table for assistance. All the club’s perishables and milk were distributed to needy staff as has been done with every lockdown.  Whilst the club has been closed, we have been getting on top of deep cleaning the kitchen, including the flu’s and canopies, as well as numerous other upkeep/maintenance jobs requiring trades. We also have to keep up our essential safety measures as far as the building goes and that continues to be a priority including extra night-time security.

With each announcement extending lockdown we’ve had to adapt. All our beer lines have now been cleaned out, all bistro and function bookings cancelled up until we can re-open. We don’t know what restrictions will be in place once lockdown ends. You will recollect during the 8 days we were opened in July/August that we were only permitted 100 patrons in total both inside and outside the club. This is extremely challenging to manage but we will continue to navigate through this in order to get some staff back to work as well as provide a meeting place for you to catch up with friends and family once more. We understand how horrible it is for those on their own.

As far as the viability of the club goes, we are in sound financial state. We have received a couple of minor grants with more to come. We urge anyone struggling with lockdown to pick up the phone and make a call to a family member or friend. Face Timing with friends over a coffee or beverage is a wonderful way to keep connected.

We urge you all to continue doing the right thing so that we can get back to opening the club. In the meantime, stay safe and look out for each other.  I do encourage all who are not vaccinated to consider getting COVID jabs after consultation with your GP on what’s most appropriate for you personally. It may well come to pass that Spring Street may in the future mandate that only those who are fully-vaccinated will be permitted to enter public events, restaurants, hotels, clubs and like venues as is happening overseas – so be prepared friends. Naturally if these admittance measures are introduced the Club will have to strictly enforce them to prevent huge fines and protect our liquor and gaming licences.
